Money Matters
Other Costs of Living to Consider
Setting up a home: If this is your first time living on your own away from your parents, you'll need to buy some basic stuff to make your new place a home. For example, you'll need kitchen utensils, personal hygiene items, bedding, towels, laundry detergent, furniture, etc. You may be able to inherit some of these items second-hand from friends and family. Garage sales are another way to save money and find some great treasures!
Transportation: In most regions of BC, there is good public transit to your institution. If not, think of other cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to get around, such as carpooling, cycling, walking or in-line skating.
If you relocated to a different city to attend school, the cost of a return trip home may set you back a few dollars.
Tenant's Insurance: Tenant's insurance is an expense that may help you at a time of need when you can least afford it. Remember that your landlord's insurance only covers damages to the suite itself - it does not cover your personal belongings from fire, flood or earthquake. Inquire with an insurance agency for information on types of coverage and costs.
Change of Address: Because moving is expensive, you may save money if you find a place to live and remain there for the duration of your studies. In addition to the costs of transporting you and your belongings, each time you relocate you'll have to pay utility hook-up fees.
